Weight Loss and Cancer

In the past decade, healthcare providers have spent an increasing amount of time trying to determine whether or not obesity puts individuals at risk for certain diseases. The answer is unequivocally “yes.” While some links have yet to be explained, studies have shown that obesity is a major factor in the development of certain kinds of cancer. Individuals who are obese have been found to be more likely to develop cancer of the breast, colon, larynx, gallbladder, lymphoma and many others. Obesity has also been found to slow the detection process, by interfering with diagnostic imaging results.

In addition to these trends, doctors have found that obesity also affects a patient’s ability to recover, and can even make death after treatment more likely. A recent study in a journal of the American Cancer Society had found that men who are overweight or obese at the time of diagnosis of prostate cancer are nearly twice as likely to die from it. Similarly, women who gain weight after the diagnosis of breast cancer increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than half.

The good news in all this is that obesity is something you can change, and you don’t have to do it alone. There is a whole team of individuals at Mercy LIGHT waiting to help you on your way to better health and a longer life. Why not start the change today?
