Frank Beer
Frank Beer, owner of the local RadioShack and active member of the Manhattan community, has always struggled with his weight. Beer made the decision to make his quest to lose weight a fundraising competition, with benefits going to the Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, after viewing the popular reality TV series, “The Biggest Loser.” He approached long-time friend, Dave Lewis, with his plan and they agreed they could both use a little help in the fight to change their lifestyle.
Beer is looking forward to the competition being just the “kick in the pants” he needs to get with a fitness program and stick to it. His wife and four children are a big part of his motivation to get healthy; an active lifestyle with them is something he’d like to enjoy well into his later years.
Outside of the responsibilities of managing his store, Beer has served as the chair of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee and as a member of the Chamber board of directors. He currently sits on the board of directors for RSVP of the Flint Hills, a United Way agency, and Leadership Manhattan. He graduated from the Leadership Manhattan program in 2003. He was also a driving force behind the Manhattan 24/7 campaign to promote Manhattan as a regional trade area, and the recipient of the Chamber’s volunteer of the year award in 2007.
Dave Lewis
Also an active member of the community, and currently the public address announcer for the K–State Wildcats, Dave Lewis’ past efforts in weight loss programs had proven successful. But, his growing family (including his 12 year-old daughter and expectant wife) has inspired him to be more proactive about his health.
While the goal of many people involved in fitness programs is to simply lose weight, Lewis has a more encompassing goal in mind: to get healthy. He’s hoping the nature of the competition will help him stick to the program and reach his goal.
Dave is an account executive for two local magazines, Statements and Manhattan Magazine. In addition to announcing football and men’s basketball games for K-State, Lewis owns All Star DJ, a business that provides music and entertainment for special events, as well as Game Show Road Show, a popular source of amusement at events, fundraisers and functions. Lewis no longer works in radio, but remains a very busy and involved individual. Lewis has long been a customer of Beer’s Radio Shack store.
